The Glander Art Studio (Manitowoc, Wis.) was opened for business in 1908 by John A. Glander after his six year apprenticeship with the A.J. Packard studio. He crafted a national reputation for his portraiture, and photographed many of Wisconsin's prominent figures, including Robert M. La Follette, Joseph McCarthy, Wisconsin governors, judges, and Manitowoc's business and industrial leaders. John, with the help of his son Henry, also documented the development of Manitowoc and its major boat and ship manufacturers, Burger and Manitowoc Shipping Company. In addition, the two men captured the civic, retail and light industrial evolution of the community. Photographs in the collection include individual and group portraits of various sizes, some retouched with hand colorizing, and arranged alphabetically. Also included is the work the Glander's did for their commercial clients including Mirro Aluminum, Heresite Chemical, Rahr Malting, and the shipping industries of Manitowoc. The photographs also document the city's many civic and musical groups and the changes in the character of the community during the time the Studio was in operation. The few Studio records in the collection include photocopies of some of the studio's photographs and its advertising. Also included are biographical papers including a handwritten diary of John A. Glander, personal correspondence, and the military records of Henry J. Glander.
